This course will undertake an anthropological analysis of the cultural, scientific, and political debates surrounding environmental conflicts. Drawing on perspectives from environmental justice, environmental health, and science and technology studies, this course will examine how communities, governments, and corporations respond to environmental disasters and their aftermaths. The course will explore how everyday experience and scientific expertise shape the production of environmental knowledge, the power relations that underlie environmental conflicts, the politics of corporate social responsibility, and the ways that environmental science and technologies shape our lives as they become incorporated into legal and medical regimes.
